How To Prepare Your Trees for Winter

Protect your trees from the first frost by wrapping stems with wire.  The tender bark of a young tree will be destroyed by critters if not wrapped appropriately.  You can purchase commercial tree guard products for saplings or young trees in your yard at most garden centers.

How To Prepare Perennials for Winter

Cut dry stems of perennials to soil level after first frost.  This will remove pest eggs and disease spores.  You may leave stems with seed heads if you prefer.

How To Winterize Roses

As the temperature drops, your roses will be entering into their dormant stage.  However, they still need to be prepared for winter.  Hybrid tea roses are the most delicate.  Stop fertilizing and you want to feed them for the last time of the season around 2 months before the first frost.  Don’t worry about pruning and don’t cut any blossoms.  Remove all mulch and spread fresh mulch or wood chips out to the same length as the tips of the branches.  Water well.  After the first freeze, add more mulch.

How To Prepare Evergreensfences and supplies

First, cut off diseased foliage from your evergreens.  Then, be sure to screen your evergreens.  Place burlap screens or shade cloth shelters all the way around the plant by placing stakes in four corners around the tree.  Wrap the burlap around to protect from drying winter winds and sun.
