How To Have Your Own Wildflower Garden

Anyone can plant wildflowers, however, it’s not as easy as spreading seeds in your yard.  The rewards of a wildflower patch are worth the gardening efforts.  The point of the wildflower garden, aside from it’s raw beauty, is the low cost, low effort alternative to traditional gardening.  The key to a wildflower garden is finding flowers that are native to Denver, as these will grow the best with minimal effort.  In today’s post we will give you tips on how to plant a wildflower garden and which wildflowers are native to Denver.

Mix with Sand

If you are planting your wildflowers from seeds, mix sand in to help spread the seeds more evenly.  Spread seeds evenly over area to be planted, this will ensure your plants will not be in competition with each other.

Sunny Side Up

Find the sunniest place in your yard to begin your garden.  Wildflowers need at least 6 to 8 hours of sun per day to be at their optimum.  They can tolerate a minimum of 5 hours per day.

Plant in the Fall

Fall is the best time to plant your seeds.  The winter snow will promote germination for you to reap the rewards in the spring!  When sowing your seed, spread about 4-8 ounces of seed per 1000 square feet.  Too much seed will cause perennials to be overcrowded by the annuals.  Lightly rake soil over your seeds.  Seeds will begin to germinate in 10 to 15 days, on average!
