Now, that you have your plot staked out, you know where your garden will be, what will you plant in it?

What To Plant?

Plants that can tolerate light frost and which like cooler temperatures can be safely planted now.  Plants that prefer warm temperatures and soils are generally not planted until late May, or even June.  If you have a raised bed, the soil will warm earlier than the normal ground.  First frosts occasionally come in September, but typically in October.  Providing protection from the cold can stretch your growing season considerably.

What to Plant Now!

Broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and lettuce can all be planted now and harvested in 7-9 weeks, ready for your summer salad!  Peas can be planted and ready in about 10 weeks to harvest.  Parsley, if planted now, provides a continual harvest.  Root crops, such as beets, carrots and radishes, as well as their leafy friends, spinach and swiss chard will be ready 4-8 weeks to harvest.

Plants That Thrive in Denver

Plants that trive in DenverThese are the top ten plants which thrive in Denver and whether you have a green thumb or not, they will likely survive.  These would be great plants to begin with, if you are a novice gardener.

  1. True Geraniums or Hardy Geraniums
  2. Roses
  3. Catmint
  4. Yarrow– this can be a bit aggressive in well watered areas, you may want to limit to portions of garden where little else will survive
  5. Columbine– Our state’s flower, no garden is complete without this beauty.  Many varieties reseed readily and bloom in early summer.  After the flower head dies, if it is pinched off, will be coaxed to bloom again.
  6. Daylily
  7. Clematis Vines– These are best if planted under a tree or other shade and to support the vine as it grows upwards.
  8. Russian Sage– This summer bloomer thrives in Denver and will produce into the fall.  It also requires very little attention- a perfect beginner for the budding green thumbs!
  9. Butterfly Bush– These beauties are worth the wait.  They may appear unsightly until mid July or August, but will come alive soon enough and attract their namesake into your garden along with an occasional hummingbird.
  10. Salvia– Thrives in most difficult soil, can be planted in the hot, dry areas of your garden where nothing else grows
