What To Do With Your Yard Now with Boundary Fence in Denver!

With cooler weather comes autumn yard care. In this two part series, we cover what your yard needs this month in preparation for winter!  Boundary Fence Supply and Company in Denver has everything you need for a beautiful yard. We provide fencing and gates for your residential or commercial property. In addition to fencing, today we give tips for maintaining a beautiful lawn throughout fall and what needs to be done now for a healthy yard in the spring!

Fertilizer

Fertilize lawns with an organic fertilizer which will encourage root development during winter months. Lawns that receive late season fertilizing are often the first to begin growing in spring.

Raking

Be sure to rake this fall!  Lawn raking removes excess debris from your yard and helps maintain water quality. In winter, freezing and thawing causes leaves and dead grass to mat and cause snow mold under snow areas.

How does your garden grow?Watering Your Lawn

It may be cooler than the summer, but your lawn still needs water. Your lawn does continue to grow and watering is necessary for the continued growth. Water about an inch to an inch and a half per week until the ground is cold and beginning to freeze.  If you have an automatic irrigation system, avoid damage by having it blown out with compressed air, so water will not freeze in the pipes and the sprinkler heads.

Mowing

In the fall, it is important to keep your grass 2 to 2 ½ inches tall. If your grass gets longer, it will mat, leading to winter lawn disease such as snow mold. If your grass is shorter than 2 inches, you will severely limit it’s ability to make and store food for the spring.

Seeding Your Lawn

Fall is the best time to repair lawns by seeding. This should be completed by the end of September. The cooler temperatures contribute to making the seeding successful. Labor day is a good day to remember seeding.  Seeding 2 weeks prior or after this holiday will give your seedlings time to strengthen their roots. In fact, overseeding with grass seed and fertilizer in the fall can make your lawn up to 49% thicker by springtime!
