In this two series post, we celebrate Colorado’s diversity, particularly in fall colors, and the best place to view them! Today we look at most scenic drives from Denver for a weekend getaway.
When To Go
Colorado’s fall foliage season is right around the corner, beginning in September. Don’t wait for the aspen’s in Denver to change colors before heading out. It will be too late! The trees in the mountains change colors earlier than those in the Mile High City. The destinations in today’s post are more than a few hours drive from Denver and would require a short weekend or long weekend trek to view. Combined with a camping trip, you have the perfect fall weekend to celebrate life in Colorado!
Independence Pass and Leadville
The San Isabel National Forest displays the best aspen viewing in North America. Standing in the shadows of Colorado’s tallest mountain, Mt. Elbert, the aspens you will find will be awash in brilliant hues of yellow, orange, red and brown. An added bonus is a train to take you to see these beauties. The Leadville, Colorado and Southern Railroad, is a must-see train that climbs the Continental Divide through thick stands of aspens. Early viewing begins in September. The colors peak in early October and wains through the end of the month.
Telluride
Telluride is home to one of the most famous aspen viewing areas. The Telluride Free gondola provides aerial views including Telluride, the canyon, and valleys lined with colorful aspens and evergreens. If you are more of a hiker, take the three-mile loop beginning in town that winds through aspen groves and passes by Comet Falls. You won’t be disappointed by the views and vistas in this quaint town!
