Planting a Multi-Purpose Herb Garden in Denver

 In Blog

There’s nothing better than heading out into your garden and picking fresh herbs for your meals. The best part about it, herbs are fairly easy to grow and if you pick the right herbs, you not only have a delicious, freshly seasoned meal but you may also be able to keep away some of those pesky bugs that have been buzzing around Denver.

Most of us love spring and summer seasons, but a garden full of mosquitos ruins every pleasure in them. But, it can be so much better! Make your garden plans for next year with lots of time. Here are some inspiration and tips.

Planting herbs and spices
to repel mosquitoes

One of the downfalls of being outdoors is the inevitable blood-sucking mosquito. They are unavoidable and they can potentially carry diseases like West Nile virus. But there are ways you can make your garden less attractive to the mosquito. Believe it or not, there are several herbs that will make any meal delicious AND fight mosquitoes at the same time. Here’s a good starting list of herbs that will enhance your cooking, while keeping the mosquitoes at bay:

  • Lemon Balm – a great alternative to citronella. Mosquitoes hate it, but you’ll love a fresh cup of lemon balm herbal tea made from the dried leaves of the plant
  • Lavender – speaking of herbal tea, why not add a little lavender to that lemon tea you have brewing. Plus, lavender provides a beautiful splash of purple (lavender?) to your garden, porch or window sill. The sweet scent of lavender will soothe and calm your soul, but it will drive the mosquitoes crazy.
  • Peppermint – peppermint is great for teas, cocktails, ice water, lemonade, desserts and fruit salads. Again, what is delicious to us is disgusting to mosquitoes and other bugs. They do NOT like the taste or the smell. And should a blood-sucking bug fight the awful smell (to them) of peppermint and buzz in for a bite to eat, a fresh mint leaf will soothe the itch and the sting! Peppermint is quite literally a wonder-herb.
  • Basil – yes, basil! Basil is like the savory cousin to peppermint. It goes great in almost any meal, even uncooked in a fresh salad, and I bet you can make a great basil martini if you’ve got a little mixologist hiding inside you. Basil also comes in many varieties, so you can play around a little with this great herb. Whichever species you choose, they all have two things in common: they taste great and they repel mosquitoes!
