Your Fence Can Survive the Cold Season
Don’t forget about your wooden boundary fence when you prepare your home for winter.
Just like other areas of your home, fall and winter can cause damage to your wood fence. Exposure to the cold air, snow, and rain can weaken wood structures and make them more susceptible to decay and insect infestation. The good news is that there are a few things you can do now to minimize potential damage.
Wooden Fence Preparing Tips
Firstly, make sure that you have drained any water from pressure-treated lumber before it freezes so as not to crack boards or cause fungal decay. Secondly, use cedar oil or linseed oil on unfinished portions of exposed wooden fences so that they may weather well during this season without staining from rain or snow molding. Thirdly, clean off dirt and debris from the surface of your fence using a pressure washer with soap and water. Apply this mixture to mossy areas or where bird droppings accumulate. To prevent slippage, also apply silicone or Teflon spray onto metal posts and caps in order to protect them against corrosion by keeping them dry. Last but not least, install some ice-melting chemicals near points where people usually walk across the sidewalk in order to reduce their risk of slipping on ice patches or even falling into puddles! For example, invest in rock salt (such as calcium chloride), which is cheap, easy to transport around, and melts ice quickly. It will also keep your lawn green because it has a low corrosive effect on soil when used sparingly. Alternatively, you can purchase less expensive products such as sand or kitty litter which will work too!
