Keeping Your Yard Cool This Summer!
In our two part series on keeping cool, Boundary Fence and Supply Company gives ideas for creating a backyard that beats Denver’s heat this summer! In our last post, we mentioned one of the ways to create a cool oasis is by landscaping. In today’s post we will look at the best shade trees in Denver to grow in your yard. Fencing and trees are the foundation to any yard. The fencing sets the stage by creating visual boundaries. Trees add to the visual element by introducing dimension, beauty and texture to your landscaping. Below are the best trees to grow in Denver for shade.
Paperback Maple
If you have an irrigated lawn, this shade tree works very well. It’s a deciduous tree and reaches to the heights of 20 to 30 feet with a spread of 10 to 25 feet. Plant this beauty in either full or partial sun. In the fall you will see colors of green change to bright reds, with stem colors of reds and purple browns.
Colorado White Fir
This is an excellent choice for an easy maintenance tree option. The Colorado Fir does not require a lot of water and thrives in drier areas due to its drought tolerance. You will see purple pine cones that turn to deep brown, accompanied by long, slender blue-green needles. This massive tree grows to heights of 30 to 50 feet with a spread of 15 to 30 feet. Denver Botanic Garden recommends this evergreen for residential plantings, however, you will need a large space in order for this tree to grow to maturity.
Quaking Aspen
This deciduous tree, so famously known to Colorado residents, works well in large backyards, as they reach heights up to 40 feet tall. It’s known for its white bark, slender appearance and quaking green heart shaped leaves. Well-drained soils best support this native tree.
Weeping Cyprus
This evergreen is great for areas that don’t get a lot of water. Trees reach up to 15 to 35 feet with a spread of 8 to 15 feet. The foliage is dark green and droops, much like a weeping willow. The Denver Botanic Gardens recommend this tree for use in residential landscaping.
